I learned that the hard way. I once fell hard on frozen ground from a galloping horse who inhaled to extend his girth, so that the saddle slipped to the side when he exhaled and I was just hanging there on the horses' left side. He then tried to crash me into trees, so I just let myself drop. (Smart horse, but a little crazy.) Fortunately, most horses I have met have been much kinder and more cooperative.

I think it's the same with dogs and some other domesticated animals; they can sense if someone is afraid or comfortable or really loves animals, and most will react accordingly. Also, I know it's important to approach a new animal in the correct and respectful way (i.e. let them smell your hand and show you it's okay before you touch them or, in some cases, wait and let them come to you, etc.)

Thanks for the sound advice about evaluating schools. Makes a lot of sense.

p.s. What do you think I'm telling the horse about me from the way I'm sitting in my photo?

Just the way u sit on a horse tells the horse about you. You would have seen some horses behave well with one rider while misbehave with another thats all because the horse knows when the rider is in control and if he feels the rider is not in control then the animal instinct- it takes control

Ok now first go and see the horses. a school which looks after their horses well is the first sign of a good school then come to the instructor. What is his approach towards a student, is it only for getting the bucks out of you or is he/ she genuinely interested. Does he first try to teach about the animal which you must learn first about their instincts whether the animal is sick or not and the various things like starting with introduction just to the parts of the horse. Its seems trivial but only when you understand a horse can the horse understand you.

the school which teaches the students only to ride logically is good enough but if they cant teach you to bond with the horse then they are not worth going to.

Horses are all about trust . if they trust you they will jump over a blind wall if they dont you will go over the wall alone.

You see fortunately i had a good learning experience in both.
I always say riding a horse is like riding a motorcycle or driving a car.... you dont try to go against the machine you go with the machine and make the machine do what you want.

A horse is a marvel of nature. the first thing in a horse is that a horse should be able to trust the rider. this the horse does by the way you sit on the horse, the way you provide aid to the horse and finaly the way you play with the reins. email me what you want to know on my e mail id rabbitarmour64@gmail.com and i will tell you tricks i used when i learnt riding and then jumping and finally polo
